My Story

Fortune brought Birch and Astrid together, creating a fabulous pair that we’re not breaking up. Birch was found as a very young kitten by herself in the Bronx, and Astrid was rescued a month later near a busy fast food restaurant. It turns out they are just what the other needs and they deserve to stay together forever. Birch is a happy, innocent soul. She purrs when you pet her, she purrs when she plays, she even purrs when she eats. She enjoys being held, unless she’s playful, then there’s no holding her back. She’s got almost no athletic ability, but she always gives her best effort. That said, when she is chasing the laser pointer she looks like an Olympian. Birch enjoys playing with you, but also entertains herself well. She sleeps with her human most nights, but leaves if they are too restless. She’s learned that if she headbutts your hand when you are partially awake that you’ll pet her, which is a pretty great way to wake up. She seeks out her human for cuddles and lap time during the day. Based on her frame and unusually soft hair texture we suspect she is part Angora. Birch can be wary of people initially, preferring to stay out of arms reach. Once she knows you, she’ll greet you with a little chirp or trill, marching towards you, tail up. When she is feeling sassy she doesn’t like to be caught, but a few treats change her mind fast. Birch doesn’t like loud noises, and will make herself scarce when the vacuum comes out. Astrid is as sweet and loving a kitten as you could imagine. She has a happy, steady, and balanced personality. Astrid LOVES petting and being near her human. She’ll take almost any chance she can to curl up on your lap, melting your heart and making it impossible to dislodge her. If you work from home, she’ll be your helper, sitting on or near you. She sleeps pressed against your torso or in the crook of your arm at night. She gets along well with other cats, matching the other kitten’s energy during playtime. Although mild mannered, she can turn up the heat and give it as good as she gets. She and Birch love to wrestle, but also curl up with each other when it is time for a nap. Astrid loves playing with toy mice, especially the ones with rabbit fur. She’ll run herself silly for a good wand toy, but after that, she hasn’t met a toy she doesn’t like. She is bold, and is unafraid of vacuums, fans, or other noises. Both Astrid and Birch like other cats. While Birch likes being with other cats, she’s very low in the hierarchy. She was picked on and ostracized by other cats before arriving at her current foster home, and its taken some for her to regain her confidence. She has grown very connected to Astrid, who is very self-assured. They have different personalities that give each other what they need. Perhaps because of her past (being alone, then being ostracized), Birch is well intentioned but awkward with other cats. Astrid isn’t put off by her quirks and meets her where she is, and Birch’s confidence has grown as a result. Astrid likes having a companion to explore and play with, and Birch is her favorite. They can go to a home with resident cats, but due to Birch’s past experience, this pair cannot go to a home with an assertive, strongly dominant, or bully cat. Both kittens are untested with dogs. They have met middle-school aged children. Astrid was wary at first but was willing to play with them. Birch was more been reserved but OK, but she wouldn’t do well with younger or more “grabby” children. (She doesn’t lash out, but it will stress her having little kids come at her.) Both, but especially Birch, would do better in a house that is less chaotic. It is hard to overstate how much joy these two kittens have brought to their foster humans. They are both simply amazing kittens, and it has taken all of our strength not to “foster fail” with them. If you want loving, sweet, cuddly kittens to dote on, this is your pair. Both kittens are spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, and FIV/FeLV negative. They are in foster in the Hudson Valley of NY, but we will travel for the right home.
