My Story

Socialization/training: Hanna came to us shy and fearful but her transformation into a happy and confident pup has been amazing! She loves attention from her people and is very affectionate. She loves people and will happily greet someone who comes into the house or while out on a walk. She's very well socialized with other dogs and enjoys their companionship. Hanna has shared toys, treats and her foster parents with the resident dogs and other fosters without qualms. She has learned to sit and has good recall to her name most of the time. Coming from the streets of Greece, being in a home was a whole new experience for her. Once she became acclimated to the new and unfamiliar aspects of living in a home, her sweet and loving personality came out. She knows some basic commands and can learn new skills with training and consistency. Crate trained: Hanna is not crated. She sleeps snuggled next to us during the night. If we leave the house, she has free roam with the other dogs. She has not been destructive and is potty trained. She will usually go upstairs to the bedroom and sleep on one of the dog beds until we return. Leash trained: It's a work in progress. She does pull a bit but because of her size she won't pull you off your feet. She loves going for daily walks and will sit nicely when putting on her harness. Activity Level: Hanna loves to be outside. She will chase tennis balls for as long as you throw them. She's not thrilled with baths but doesn't mind getting wet chasing the water hose. She'll run nonstop with the other dogs looking for squirrels, birds and bugs. Inside Hanna settles down easily and will sit next to you on the sofa for belly rubs. Fence: Physical fence is required since she is constantly on the go when outside. Behavior: Hanna loves attention. She learned to play with toys while in foster care and has a few favorites. She can also be independent and will go upstairs to her dog bed to relax. It took her three weeks before she felt comfortable walking on hardwood floors. She took the phrase, the floor is lava, seriously! Going through doorways, climbing stairs and jumping on the sofa were hurdles she overcame with time and patience. She's still not a fan of thunderstorms and needs to be cuddled next to her human to feel safe. She has come so far from those early days and is now confident in the routine of the home. She has no insecurities outside and loves to play, chase birds, get squirted with the hose and any other mischief she can get into! Medical History: Hanna is microchipped, spayed, up to date on all vaccines and is on monthly heartworm/flea/tick preventative. Hanna needed to have a tooth extracted and had a cleaning during the procedure. Her next leishmania test is due no later than 1/29/2025. Hanna originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. She tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250 or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80. Foster Comments: Hanna has proven to be a resilient little girl. With love, reassurance and patience she blossomed in foster care. She's the perfect blend of sweet, sassy, playful and affectionate. Hanna would do best in a home with another confident dog and with a family that will take the time and have the patience for her to become a beloved member of the family. Foster Location: Schaumburg, IL Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $50.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (Health Certificate). Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far Western states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions.
