My Story

Meet Bernard! When this boy first came to us from a rural shelter, we thought he was a hospice case. He would walk a few steps and then collapse from the pain. He was skin and bones. He was delusional. He had been living in his feces on a concrete floor. We knew we couldn't leave him there. His original foster bailed, placing him in overflow care where he was surrounded by other dogs and very stressed. He struggled with being underweight, hair loss, and severe GI issues. We did tons of testing and ultimately discovered it was all stress related. We were finally able to secure a foster home for Bernard that had the perfect set up for him, and then suddenly, this boy finally got to transform like he deserved! Bernard has since gained weight, grown a healthy coat, and has had NO GI issues. He still has some quirks and things that overstimulate him, but his foster mom has done an incredible job with his training and teaching him how to live a normal dog life. We think Bernard grew up in an outdoor kennel, and we believe his only socialization was for breeding. Because of that, he doesn’t really understand what it’s like to be a normal dog. His current setup is a little different but brings him the most joy. He has an outdoor temp controlled dog house (like an actual house) with his own big fenced in run. He likes to come into the main house for time with his foster mom. He is still learning what is a chew toy and what isn’t, and is a curious boy who likes to check everything out! He’s kind of like a puppy in an old man's body. Bernard enjoys leash walks, soft beds to lay on, and spending time in his house with a good chew. His ideal home is one that understands the quirks of a German Shepherd (one of the best breeds IYKYK), and a home where he can be the only dog. Bernard has met other dogs and done well, but again, he had very limited socialization and it’s hard for him to read other dogs. Bernard is fully vetted and is ready for his forever home! (Bernard is located in Charleston SC)
