My Story

Meet Birch! Birch is an adorable young male Pit-mix pup that SDH brought in from the recent spay & neuter clinic that was held in the rural farming community of Christmas Valley, southeast of Bend. 95 animals were spayed/neutered! Background of their mom Maple and her pups: A concerned and caring local family in CV had rescued Maple from a local resident where there clearly was a case of abuse and neglect. Maple was severely underweight and malnourished, had lost most of her fur. Fortunately, the family was able to take her home where they had cared for her and had nursed her back to health, and she had since given birth to her puppies. SDH now has mama Maple and three of her puppies Spruce, Cedar and Birch. They're extremely happy, healthy pups and they've now been spayed/neutered, microchipped, are up to date on their vaccinations and also had their wellness checks by SDH's veterinarian. Submit your online adoption application through our website today and don't miss this opportunity to bring this sweet pup home for a 3-day home trial towards their adoption. Will you be my hero? Foster update: What an enjoyable snuggly little boy he is! He's still figuring things out, but it's so entertaining to watch him try to play and interact with and learn from the foster's 4 resident dogs. He copies them chewing on their bones, tries to wrestle and play, and has been running around with them in the yard and enjoys playing in the snow. There's no doubt he'll make someone a wonderful companion. He's not potty trained yet, but he's learning every day and he will go on his potty pad when confined to his play pen during times his fosters cannot supervise him, but he enjoys car rides, being held and cuddled, TV snuggle time and he sure loves treats too, so this will aid in his training. He's a pure joy who just loves following his people around everywhere! steps to adopting (OUR ADOPTABLE DOGS ARE IN SEPARATE TEMPORARY FOSTER HOMES BETWEEN BEND/CENTRAL OREGON AND THE GREATER PORTLAND AREA. THEREFORE, MEET AND GREETS ARE NOT DONE AT OUR FACILITY. TO LEARN MORE, PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR ADOPTION APPLICATION ONLINE AND OUR ADOPTION PROGRAM MANAGER WILL REACH OUT TO YOU WITH FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO MEET YOUR NEW PUP!) The first step to adopting a dog from SDH is to complete the adoption application. First click on the "OUR DOGS tab up above, and then click on the orange colored "Fill out an Adoption Application here" button to start the process). Once submitted, please expect 3-5 business days or sooner for processing and to hear back from us. Once you are pre-approved, your adoption application will remain on file with us for 1 year and it can go towards multiple adoptions within that 1 year time frame before it expires. To finalize an adoption you must sign the adoption contract and pay the full adoption fee of $550. The adoption fee helps cover our costs. On average, per dog, it costs SDH between $500-$700 for vetting/medical/sterilization, transport and other rescue related expenses. All dogs are rescued and do not transport to SDH until they are healthy and ready to be adopted. All dogs are examined by a veterinarian before they fly, which includes sterilization whenever possible, given standard vaccines and rabies (if age appropriate). Most dogs are sterilized before they come into our program, however if this is not the case we will spay/neuter them once they arrive at our cost. Upon their arrival, all dogs are seen for a wellness exam by SDH's medical team. Once the adoption is finalized, any further medical care or treatment will not be covered by SDH, unless discussed prior with our medical team. All known issues are disclosed to the best of our ability prior to finalizing the adoption.
