Brodie

*This is a courtesy listing.* Meet Brodie! 8-year-old Brodie needs a loving forever home. His DNA test revealed he is a blend of 12 breeds with 56% of him being Chihuahua. Whatever the mix, Brodie is 100% adorable! He weighs 16 lbs. and is neutered. I rescued Brodie from a Los Angeles "kill shelter in July. They were so crowded, that Brodie was in a noisy hallway in a small crate. I was looking for a 10lb companion for my handicapped dog who had lost her housemate one year earlier. Brodie was unlikely to be a match for our home but I couldn't leave him. He was surely going to be euthanized if he didn't die from starvation first. The only information provided when he was surrendered to the shelter one month previously, was his age and that he had a flea-bite allergy (shelter notes say he was flea infested). When I met him he was grossly underweight, terrified and had a mouthful of rotten teeth. I brought him home with a plan to foster him and help him heal physically and emotionally. The minute I brought him home, he crawled into my lap and kissed me. Once he had a bit of time to decompress, I had his medical and dental needs addressed. With tender, loving care, his sweet personality emerged. He loves people. He is friendly when meeting strangers at home, gentle, and vocal (in an adorable way). He wants to be close. I have known many dogs and Brodie is one of the most affectionate. He is currently sleeping in a cozy dog bed beside the big bed. He likes his bed as well as a cozy open-door furniture crate. He knows how to use a ramp but is a very accomplished jumper. Brodie is house-trained. He loves to go on walks as well as just hang out at home or lounge in the sunshine. Brodie does not react well to strange dogs he encounters on walks. I don't know what happened in his early life that may have made him leash-reactive. Brodie has not been exposed to young children or cats. He seems disinterested in his dachshund housemate and would probably be content as an only dog. He didn't respond well (growled) when my other dog tried to initiate play. Brodie loves human companionship so much that someone who is retired or works from home would be a good match. I think he does best in a peaceful environment. A private home all on one level as he has age-related spondylosis which might explain why he prefers to be picked up vertically (like how you'd pick up a small child under the arms). Going to the vet has been stressful for him. Perhaps it brings back frightening memories of the shelter. I hope that, with time, he will feel more relaxed. Brodie needs regular access to a fenced yard or regular walks to maintain his good potty habits. If you're looking for a loving, laid-back companion, Brodie might just be the perfect fit for you!
