My Story
THIS DOG IS AS HAPPY AS HE LOOKS.
And he loves to share his joy.
When you consider how sad his story is, it is truly remarkable but Butterbean Blue. is a true optimist.
Blue came to our attention when we were contacted by a neighbor of his. Blue's owner had been seriously ill, for four or five years and was found passed away in his home, seven days after he died. Blue had been outside the whole time, with no food or water, which is what alerted the neighbor to the probability of something being very wrong.
Blue arrived GROSSLY overweight. His owner was too weak and sick to care for him properly, so blue was free fed from a bag and Blue, loves to eat. At his last weigh in with his owner, before everything went wrong, Blue weighed 94.5 pounds. That is nearly twice, what the average Australian Shepherd should weigh.
Blue was also covered in thick felted fur and because first responders threw him a big bag of food and a huge bucket of water, not knowing how long it would be, before he could be removed from the property, Blue dove in, with disastrous results. If you know what this does to a dog's digestive system, after not eating or drinking for as long as he had, you will know that poor Blue's entire matted backside became a disgusting mess of liquid feces.
It took about a week to get him sorted out, internally and externally, and to get him on a health regime, that would restore him to a healthy weight. He was surprisingly agile and active, for as overweight as he was, which has made it a lot easier to help him trim down. We are happy to say, in the five weeks we have had him, Blue has lost ten pounds and can now jump into the truck, for his beloved truck rides, all by himself, which makes him very proud.
Blue is such a sweet and gentle dog. He loves people, especially kids and can usually be found in his foster's grandkids room, happily keeping an eye on "his boys" with a big Aussie smile on his face. He has a huge heart and is desperate to give it to a person or family, that will keep him on his health program, which is pretty simple really. Weight management food and daily easy walks.
Blue is dog and cat friendly, house broken, crate trained, great on a leash and loves meal and treat time and going on adventures. We took him to an off-sight event where he met dozens and dozens of people, and he loved every one of them BUT, at night, when he posts up outside your bedroom door, Blue is on duty and he will protect you, as his genetics dictate.
Blue is not a barker or a jumper and his fur is now super healthy and soft as down. His eyes might look a little wonky, but he sees just fine and he has thee best wiggle butt, on the planet.
To make sure Blue's weight gain was not medically induced, we ran blood work on him that showed him to be in excellent shape. Interested parties should know that we will quiz your vet, on the weight status of your existing pets, to make sure you understand how important it is, to keep pets trim and healthy. Blue has worked hard at shedding both his unhealthy fur and his unhealthy fat and still has another 20-25 pounds to go, to ensure he lives a long and fulfilling life. We got the ball rolling, and his adopters need to be prepared to keep that momentum going. Blue's health and longevity, depends on it.
Blue is eight years old, neutered, up to date on five way and rabies vaccinations, wormed and microchipped and ready for a fun, healthy active life with a family or new best friend.
