My Story

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Cannon and his two canine siblings JJ and Clifford were surrendered to Safe Haven when their owner found himself in the middle of a sad unexpected life change where he had to move into an apartment and simply was not in a position to keep his three dogs. All three dogs are purebred Golden Retrievers and Cannon is a typical goofy Golden that loves everyone he meets, and while he has made a few new dog friends at Safe Haven, he is very reactive and too interested in our cats, so a cat free home will be the best fit for Cannon. He does prefer the company of a calm slow moving person, over a loud hectic environment that may include rough housing, etc. Cannon has offered a couple growls when he is uncomfortable being overhandled around his head and mouth, or when someone trys to take something he wants from his mouth. It may not always be safe to try and reach in to remove things he should not be chewing on - so we think a home with older children may be best, and a home that understands how to read a dog's body language and that rough housing with Cannon is just not a safe form of play. In the first few years of his life Cannon did live as an inside and outside dog on his owner's farm - but for the past several years Cannon lived in an outside dog kennel building type of setup. Unfortunately this led Cannon to not be housetrained, so his adoptive family will need to be ready to start over and work on housetraining. He also had not received any vet care since he was a puppy and at his first intake vet appointment he was found to be very overweight at 127 pounds, with poor coat condition and areas of hair loss, very anemic, and also has hypothyrodism - which will likely be a lifelong condition that will need yearly vet checks to check his thyroid levels and adjust his thyroid medication as needed. After 6 weeks of loving care at Safe Haven and close medical rehab care under the guidance of a veterinarian - he is now off medical hold and is ready for adoption! Canon has lost over 25 pounds, is no longer anemic, but will continue to take a daily prescription thyroid medication, and will be neutered on Wednesday, March 5th. He is now looking and feeling great and ready to head to his forever home on Friday, March 7th where he can live as the happy inside dog that he deserves to be now! Interested in adopting this pet?
