Cici was owner surrendered because of anal prolapse and inability to take to the vet for needed surgery. Cici got energy surgery to repair the prolapse, she had parvo, she was hospitalized. She has recovered been doing so well! It’s been 10 months since she has been in our care. She is almost 2 years old and weighs approximately 20 lbs. Cici does need veterinary prescribed gastrointestinal dog food. This costs approximately $130 for 27 lbs bag. This helps with her bowel movements. She hasn’t had another prolapse but yes she can.
French bulldogs are prone to prolapse, particularly rectal prolapse, due to their unique facial structure (brachycephaly) which can cause straining during defecation, combined with their genetic predisposition to weaker pelvic muscles, often leading to difficulties with bowel movements like constipation or diarrhea, which further increases the risk of straining and potential prolapse; this is further exacerbated by their short, pushed-in nose making breathing difficult during exertion, contributing to the problem.
