My Story

Name; Duke From: Turkey Fostered in: WA Age: estimated to be 7 Weight: 54lbs Energy: Medium with spurts of zoomies Personality: Duke is a sweet, loyal, and loving dog who is extremely dedicated to his human. He lives for affection, snuggle time, and head scratchies. Duke has a fairly balanced personality – he loves to go out for a hike, but will also happily lounge and take a long nap. Duke is goofy and amiable, while also tender, gentle, and just grateful to be loved. His personality has been showing itself much more as he experiences more and more relief from his chronic ear pain. Duke does have separation anxiety, so any adapter needs to be home with him a lot and ideally willing to try different strategies to help alleviate his anxiety. He just wants to be loved and with his person all the time.?? Best feature: EARS. Also his HUGE smile and his hilarious sleeping yips and snores. How do they interact with dogs: Duke does well with other dogs Cat friendly: Duke generally does well with cats and for the most part ignores them Kid friendly: Duke has had supervised interactions with 7 different children, between the ages of 2-10 and has done very well. Barking: Duke is not a barker as long as he is with his people. He will bark and whine very loudly if left alone or separated from his people by a gate or crate. Walks on a leash: Duke enjoys walks and does reasonably well on leash. He is not leash reactive. He occasionally gets excited and wants to pull but is learning to walk in a loose leash heel. He walks perfectly with a gentle leader or figure 8 type leash tool. Because of his leg malformations, we do not walk him more than 2 miles at a time. We also do not ask him to sit or lay down as an obedience tool so as to not exacerbate any impacts on his joints. Potty trained: yes but will mark occasionally, particularly where other male dogs are present. Marking has subsided as he has become more comfortable and settled into our home. How do they do in their crate: Duke is very distressed in a crate. We’ve spent many hours and nights working on crate training with positive reinforcement, including feeding every meal in the crate and using food incentives, working on distance and duration. We’ve seen very little progress unfortunately. Favorite hobbies: ripping heads off of stuffed animals, snuggling, fetch, napping
