Fiona is the most amazing mama. She came to us in September with 6 tiny puppies, we saved them all from being euthanized. Her paperwork says she was about 8 months old when she got pregnant, poor, sweet girl, so we guestimate she is just around (1) year old now, so still very much a puppy.
When she arrived, you could see every bone in her body, and we were worried she might not make it. at first, she was so lethargic. Not only had she been starved while pregnant, but she was found in a very horrible abusive situation and the other dog that had been with her didn't make it. Luckily, she was found before giving birth so that her puppies were born at the shelter/vet.
She was never once scared of us when she arrived, it was miraculous to see her resilience and how well she cared for her puppies. She even cared for the 9 other puppies that came to us at the same time.
After about 6 weeks of eating healthy food regularly and being able to get nice walks outside and companionship from us, from the other mama dog we took in (Sadie, she's on PF as well) and from all 15 puppies, she really started to come out of her shell.
All of a sudden, she had energy! To run and play with the tiny puppies, she loved it as did the puppies! She absolutely loves getting new toys as well as blankets or beds. She likes wearing her new sweaters/fleeces when it's cold out.
She gets along great with all of the other dogs; she was a bit excited over the cats at first but quickly learned to be gentle and not chase them. We think she'd be fine with other animals as long as she is introduced correctly and given time to adjust. She is housetrained and also learned the doggy door very quickly.
She definitely needs an owner or family that is willing to be patient and interactive with her. The individual or family needs to be somewhat active, she loves to run and play and go for walks, roll in the grass, she plays with the other dogs all the time, and is just curious to enjoy the good life in a caring home with a loving family.
She does well on a leash and listens very well. We are gently working on teaching her to control her excitement for the sake of her adopters, but we also hate to discourage the fact that she has energy and is happy to show it. She is thriving.
She has so much love and loyalty to give, whoever ends up with Fiona will be the luckiest person or family on earth. She is such a special girl with such a fun-loving personality.
Spay/neuter is included in adoption fee as long as procedure is done at our vet. Age-appropriate vaccines will be up to date as well as deworming or any other necessities. We also ask adopters to remember that when we say dogs are housetrained it doesn't mean it usually takes some time for them to adjust to a new routine, new home, and new environment.
