My Story

My name is Gus. If you saw me before, I was "Midnight" but my foster family in NJ decided I needed a lighter, more fun name to go with my blooming personality! I am about 10 months old and 65lbs. I am gorgeous. My mama was a Lab and we think my dad but a mix of maybe Dane, Shepherd and some other cool breeds... I even have some spots on my chest! I don't think I will get MUCH bigger. Basics - I am housebroken, I am crate-trained and I wouldn't hurt a fly. I am totally fine with dogs and don't worry, a cat will scare me. I had a number of siblings come through ASCZ and they are all in fantastic homes. Finally I got my turn. I am lucky... and I know I can do it! First and foremost, I am just starting out on my journey. I didn't know what a home was before I got here and I am getting used to this new life with food, treats, people that want to pet me and give me hugs, toys on the floor, leashes and other dogs that want to hang out and play. I am getting used to the noises of a house, kids coming in and out of the door (there are three of them - they sure are noisy sometimes!), TVs, phones, dishwashers and just general movement of a normal day. I am taking in all of this - every moment of it and every second I am learning. It's only day 5 here and some people would think I am adjusting very slowly and others would say, I am making great strides! All my trust is in my foster mom and she has seen my goofy and playful and affectionate side already: she's so lucky! What is required for me - a fenced in yard, yes. But, in my new humans... patience, being able to sit back and let me take the lead in getting accustomed to things, a willingness to provide calm and comforting love, small expectations and an ability to provide me room to gain confidence. Most important, the ability to know that I am going to be such an awesome dog and one that will provide many lessons along the way. I need someone to be my most trusted human(s) so I can continue to learn how to dog.
