My Story

Jane will be ready for her forever home toward the end of January. She’s about 1 ½ years old with a beautiful brindle and white coat. She’s a pit bull type dog. What makes Jane special? What makes her stand out from the 50 other dogs at the local shelter? Or the 10000 other dogs listed on Petfinder? I’m here to share her story. We’re a very small rescue – focusing on one litter and mama at a time. When our space is available, I reach out and ask the shelter staff to send me the nicest mom possible. I don’t care about breed or size or size of litter. I just want a nice mama. Because that matters. This time, they sent Jane. We spent 2 weeks getting to know her, before her puppies were born in our home. What an absolute honor to be part of that process. But more than that, by the time birth was happening, Jane and I trusted each other. We knew that no matter what, we were in this together. Eleven puppies later, near exhaustion, our relationship was solid. For the last 5 weeks, I’ve helped Jane tend to her pups. She’s a great mom. 11 puppies is a lot of work. But Jane handled it like a champ. I made sure she had clean bedding, lots of nutritious food, and so much love. Her bark was my command to figure out what she needed and then to deliver it. The puppies have transitioned to solid food and Jane has transitioned to becoming part of our family. She loves our dogs, big and small. She revels in snuggling on the couch to watch football. She spends a bit of time with the pups, trying to get them to play. But it’s clear. She is no longer a full-time mom. She’s ready for a life of her own. Our leash walks in the neighborhood are easy and serene. She doesn’t alert to anything – bring on the squirrels and deer, let the bikes and skateboards whiz by – Jane walks nicely by our side. And now, the question – why am I not keeping her? I have 3 dogs. If I follow my heart and give Jane a permanent home, I won’t be able to help another mama and litter in need. It means another deserving mom-dog doesn’t get a chance at life beyond the shelter walls. So… now the search begins. Who is ready to adopt this amazing dog?
