My Story

Nebo is a smaller lab mix, around 33 lbs and approximately 4 years old. He has the most beautiful, expressive eyes and a gorgeous black coat with tan markings on his legs. He came to rescue after being found wandering the streets in Mexico. Those streets aren't safe for a pup, and something happened to injure one of Nebo's front legs. Since it had healed wrong, our vet recommended removing the injured leg. Nebo is fully healed from that surgery, and to his foster family's amazement, he has learned to maneuver himself extremely well on three legs. Despite his history and what he's overcome, Nebo is an absolute sweetheart who loves people and is happiest when he's sharing the love. Since coming into rescue, he has developed a deep love for soft beds and warm laps. Nebo has never met a person he doesn't love and will happily snuggle with his human friends all day long if we let him. He loves to cuddle next to them on the sofa and would be thrilled to be able to nap or sleep with his humans. However, he does go into his kennel immediately when asked and sleeps quietly all night long. At about 33 lbs, he is a great size for smaller homes or apartments. He is completely housetrained and has excellent manners in the home. We have given him free run of the entire house overnight, and while away for short periods of time and he hasn't had any trouble. He doesn't bark a lot - mainly if he sees a squirrel or deer in the yard. The one area we haven't been able to retrain is his instinct to lift his leg in public areas that have a lot of other dog scents (Petsmart, adoption events, indoor pet activities). For this reason, we try to stay proactive and keep a belly band on him when going places. He has an adorable wardrobe of different prints, and doesn't mind wearing them at all. He stands nicely while we put them on, and typically won't "go" when he has one on. He doesn't need these in the home - just when visiting new environments. Nebo is currently in a foster home with several dogs of all sizes and a couple cats. He gets along well with the dogs. We've had multiple fosters come and go while he's been with us. Initially, when meeting other new dogs, he sometimes is slow to warm up to them. He seems to do very well with submissive or younger females. Older "crabby" dogs, some adult males, and energetic puppies might rub him the wrong way at first. With time, and some redirection, he has eventually learned to coexist with, often even loves all of the other dogs he's met. Nebo isn't the greatest with cats. He doesn't hurt them but he chases them down and tries to corner them whenever he sees them. He is easily redirected, and will reluctantly "leave it" when you tell him to. On the rare occasion that we weren't immediately able to intervene, he did nothing but bark at the poor cat that he cornered. We don't think he would do anything more than that, but he would likely do best in a home without cats. Nebo knows several commands, including sit, stay, come, and will do almost anything for a treat. He is still very excited to learn new things. Nebo loves to play tennis ball-fetch and will bring it back time and time again. He can get a little overly competitive with other dogs during ball play. We've found that if we let him run around with his own ball while other dogs are playing, he is perfectly happy with that. He plays well with toys on his own but isn't a big fan of sharing. If other dogs respect that, he will happily play alongside them rather than with them. He loves chew toys and also loves to spend time chomping on a yak chew or a bully stick. This boy has the confidence and personality to fit into many households. He would do fantastic as an only pet, but would also do well with other dogs, with slow introductions and a little patience. We feel he could be trained to leave cats alone as well, but that would take some time. If you are looking for a mid-sized buddy who is fully housetrained, long past the puppy behaviors and ready to be your best friend, please consider Nebo! We've got some exciting news about this pup's age! Thanks to DNA testing from Embark, we've got a fresh take on how old they really are. A big shoutout to Embark for generously donating these tests for us to explore! You might spot a difference between Embark's findings and our original guess-after all, no test or person is 100% accurate. It's all part of the adventure! Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, Alter, Prepaid microchip, Dewormed, Rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), Distemper combo vaccine(s) appropriate to age, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX (over 6 months of age), Flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue. Adoption fee: $425.00
