My Story

Meet Nino! Nino is an adorable young male mixed-breed pup who was part of a litter of puppies that came to us along with their mama from a shelter we partner with down in California's northern central valley. These pups are true survivors. I'm now PARVO FREE!! Liam, Aiden, Zoe, Valentina and Nino have all tested negative for the parvovirus. Upon their arrival with us, we found out that 12 puppies from a previous transport from California had tested positive for parvo. Sadly, two of the siblings from this litter did not make it. These were the two smallest pups who fought the disease so hard. Their bodies just couldn't hold on any longer and they crossed over the rainbow bridge. Although it's not all happy news, we are extremely grateful that these 5 siblings (and the 5 pups from Mama Taylor's litter) have all pulled through and are doing great! As with all young pups, they can benefit from having someone who's home most of the day who can tend to all of their puppy needs, and so they can begin learning through things like socialization, basic obedience training and boundary-setting, as well as getting some good play time, exercise and enrichment/mental stimulation, which are all essential for the growth and development of a maturing young puppy. Before getting adopted officially, each dog will be seen by our veterinarian for their wellness exam to ensure they're spayed/neutered, are up to date on their shots, and are microchipped. Submit your online adoption application through our website today to not miss out on this opportunity to bring this pup home for a 3-day home trial towards their adoption. Will you be my hero? Foster update: He's learning a lot. He's getting good at "sit" (it's still a struggle when he's FULL puppy energy mode, but 75% of the time he's got it and does it before I ask). We've been doing some feeding with a little puzzle and it's helping him slow down his eating while he continues to put weight on. And he is starting to more reliably ask to go out when he needs to. He's not allowed in our bedroom but we keep the door open and he's been good about approaching the door but then turning around. He's been learning a lot of good play boundaries with my older dogs - we've been doing some mini 30 sec - 2 min supervised play sessions. Sometimes he has a hard time stopping but then we just take a little hug break and he calms down very quickly. We've been practicing short walks in our back alley with some rewards for staying in the heel zone. Overall he's doing so great. Definitely a puppy but really respectful and fast learning. ***IMPORTANT HOLIDAY UPDATE!*** Don't miss our 12 Days of Christmas Adoption Specials! The first step to adopting a dog from SDH is to complete the adoption application. First click on the OUR DOGS tab up above, and then click on the orange colored Fill out an Adoption Application here button to start the process). Once submitted, please expect 3-5 business days or sooner for processing and to hear back from us. Once you are pre-approved, your adoption application will remain on file with us for 1 year and it can go towards multiple adoptions within that 1 year time frame before it expires. To finalize an adoption you must sign the adoption contract and pay the full adoption fee of $550. The adoption fee helps cover our costs. On average, per dog, it costs SDH between $500-$700 for vetting/medical/sterilization, transport and other rescue related expenses. All dogs are rescued and do not transport to SDH until they are healthy and ready to be adopted. All dogs are examined by a veterinarian before they fly, which includes sterilization whenever possible, given standard vaccines and rabies (if age appropriate). Most dogs are sterilized before they come into our program, however if this is not the case we will spay/neuter them once they arrive at our cost. Upon their arrival, all dogs are seen for a wellness exam by SDH's medical team. Once the adoption is finalized, any further medical care or treatment will not be covered by SDH, unless discussed prior with our medical team. All known issues are disclosed to the best of our ability prior to finalizing the adoption.
