My Story
When our founder, Cheri Wulff Lucas, arrived at a high-kill shelter in Los Angeles to transport two dogs to Second Chance at Love, she never expected to witness a heartbreaking betrayal. A man pulled up, opened his car door, and abandoned a stunning husky without so much as a leash. As the shelter staff led him inside, the dog kept looking back, confused, searching for the person who had left him behind.
Cheri wanted to take him that day, but her car was already full of the two dogs she’d already committed to. Determined to save him, she arranged transport a few days later, only to learn that he had fallen gravely ill. A severe respiratory infection had turned into pneumonia, and he was fighting for his life. There was a moment when we thought we would lose him. But true to his name, Phoenix rose from the ashes.
Today, Phoenix is not just surviving, he’s thriving. He is regal, resilient, and overflowing with love. A mellow soul, he enjoys his walks but is just as happy lounging by your side, content to simply be with his person. He adores people, greets everyone with warmth, and is wonderful with other dogs. In fact, if you visit the ranch, you will meet Phoenix because he insists on introducing himself.
This big, handsome boy has endured so much, yet his heart remains open and full of love. He is ready to start the next chapter of his life with someone who will cherish him as much as he will cherish them. Could that be you?
If you’re looking for a loyal, gentle companion, Phoenix is waiting to meet you.
