My Story

Pumpernickel is very calm, gentle boy who would make a great companion dog. He loves to be held and cuddled and is happiest just hanging out by your side or following you around the house. Pumpernickel was rescued from a sad situation where he was raised as an outdoor dog and survived a coyote attack which killed his partner. He seems to have recovered from this trauma well. He loves to be outdoors, but should always be supervised for his own safety. Because he was an outdoor dog, his owner will need to reinforce his potty training. He has a gorgeous sable coat which does not shed much and likes to be groomed. Pumpernickel is friendly with other dogs, friendly cats, and new people. He is extremely easy going and quiet and so lovable! He’s super cooperative with most everything. He is quiet in the crate for shorter periods of time or during rest times. In the car, he is calm also. When his family took him for a walk, you could tell he wasn’t used to going for walks so he was unsure what to do, but then he has become more used to it and is walking faster and taking time to sniff around. The same was true for steps. His foster family has only 2 steps he step he needs to climb but he was at first scared to go on them. Then he would have to take a running start and just jump over them really fast. Now, he’s used to them and goes up them very easily. So he’s very adaptable, but just doesn’t seem like he had experience with a lot of things. The only fear that his family has seen is when he feels threatened by his foster family's adult cats, who are not friendly towards him. He will bark at them if they startle him. Otherwise, he hardly ever barks. He has been around big dogs and they didn’t seem to bother him at all. He can be an escape artist and is very eager to go outdoors to explore. Especially at first in his foster home, he may want to venture outdoors and should be watched carefully when entering and leaving the home.
