Name: Roxie Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd and lab mix Best Guess for Age: 6.5 years as of February 2025 Gender: FemaleApproximate Weight: 60 lbs Gets Along With: Roxie needs to go to a home with another dog. We haven't seen her with kids or cats but she can be tested if you have them. Currently Living At: DC area boarding partner - would love a foster home while searching for her family! Special Adoption Considerations: Roxie is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs. All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care. After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months. We are happy to discuss this treatment and which phase of the study this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left!Because Roxie is shy, she needs to go to a home with a confident, welcoming resident dog. We would be cautious placing Roxie in a home with children under 12 years old because young kids can often scare shy dogs with their level of energy or noise. Children would need to be supervised closely to not leave doors open and should never walk the dog without an adult holding the leash. We would be happy to discuss this more in depth with any applicant. Roxie is Looking For: Her forever home! This sweetie landed in the shelter through no fault of her own. She's firmly closed that chapter and is eager to get her new one. The one where she gets her own humans. Where she gets to go on long sniffy walks in the neighborhood, meeting new pup and people pals - and explore the rest of the world! Quality kibble and a cushy dog bed are on her wish lost as well, and she wouldn't refuse to try puppacinos and other tasty treats either.You know what, though? She's way out of the puppy yips and as a wise, experienced dog knows what's most important in life: Being safe and loved and under her own roof. That's right at the top of her wish list. In exchange she promises adoring gazes and loyal companionship for all her days. At 60 pounds, that's a pretty huggable snuggle buddy and a solid presence by your side. How about it?
