Smokey

Let us reintroduce you to Smokey. Last February, Smokey was hit by a car. The community member who accidentally hit him—a dear friend of AZK9—immediately called us for help. Smokey somehow only sustained an eye injury, and thanks to swift care, we were able to save his eye. Soon after, a lost dog poster led us to his owner, Michael, who was overjoyed to have Smokey back. Michael’s gratitude for the care we provided sparked a friendship that grew over the year. We stayed in touch, checking in on both Michael and Smokey, always happy to hear they were both doing well. Last week our hearts broke when we received an unexpected call from Michael’s family. Michael had passed away on Christmas Eve. Before his passing, he asked his family to reach out to us to ensure Smokey would be cared for. Without hesitation, we welcomed Smokey back into the rescue. Despite the recent changes in his world, Smokey is doing well and showing his resilient spirit. As he settles in, we will begin the search for a new family who will love him as much as Michael did. Smokey is around 7–8 years old and a wonderful companion. He gets along well with other dogs but feels overwhelmed by young children, so he would do best in an adult home or one with older kids.
