Stanley, our 14 pound senior Xoloitzcuintli, came to us after his original owner could no longer care for him. We have a hard time turning down a senior in need, especially one whose breed is over 3000 years old! And although in some light Stanley also appears 3000 years old, he is a spry, wise, approximate 10 year old. Hairless grey skin is not the most youthful look, but his cheekbones are more super model than Skeletor. And now this handsome guy is looking for his retirement home.
When we took him in, Stanley had been diagnosed with a heart murmur. Stanley also had several skin masses and infected teeth that needed to be removed. We worked up Stanley's murmur and discovered that he has heart enlargement. We started him on a medication called Pimobendan (this helps enlarged hearts squeeze more effectively) and Stanley will need to continue this medication long term. We expect it to cost about $70 a month. He sailed through his dental and mass removal procedure with flying colors and is much more comfortable now. Like most toothless dogs, Stanley can eat just fine.
Stanley is a real gem. He is friendly and good with other dogs. We suspect he would be fine with cats and respectful older children. He can't hear as well as he used to and is a little slower on his adventures, but he still loves an outing. Stanley is crate and potty trained, sweet, gentle and very mellow.
Stanley is heartworm negative and current on his flea and heartworm preventatives. We recommend that anyone interested in Stanley do a little research about how to keep the skin of Xoloitzcuintlis healthy - just like us, there is a bit of maintenance.
