Sydney is a 3-year-old, 15-pound male Mini Australian Shepherd seeking an experienced and dedicated adopter. When he first arrived at his foster home, he was quite nervous and displayed typical behavioral challenges common in Aussies who haven't been properly socialized. However, he has made remarkable progress in a short time and will continue to flourish with ongoing training and patience. Sydney is not suited for first-time dog owners or those looking for a low-maintenance companion. He requires more than just physical exercise; structure and mental stimulation are key to his well-being. Simply letting him run around a backyard won't meet his needs.
Sydney's perfect forever home has:
1. Has herding dog experience and understands herding instincts; provides clear guidance and boundaries.
2. No kids
3. Dedication
Challenges to be aware of:
- Anxiety and skittishness; Sydney is overwhelmed by new or unfamiliar situations, places, and people (especially men)
- Unpredictability with other dogs; loves his foster's resident dog but can be inconsistent and reactive with unfamiliar dogs, especially on walks
- Resource guarding; this only happened once with a long-lasting treat, so a trainer says it is not necessarily a definite trait. Trainer recommends further professional evaluation to manage it moving forward
- Nipping and herding; sometimes nips and chases when he is excited
What makes Sydney special:
- Eager to learn; Sydney has quickly improved impulse control, loose leash walking, and recall
- Affectionate; Once Sydney forms a bond with you, he is very loving. He will need someone who can balance this relationship with potential separation anxiety!
- Excited to wake you up: His energy and enthusiasm for the day brighten our mornings. We have loved slowly showing him the world.
