My Story

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Witten originally came to Safe Haven in 2021 as a 3 month old puppy because his senior owner was not able to deal with his puppy antics. Not long after coming into Safe Haven he was adopted into a fantastic home, but sadly as he grew to be such a big strong and active dog, and he was just a bit too overwhelming for his smaller canine sibling and needs a home without any kitties- so he was eventually brought back to Safe Haven. Witten was lucky enough to find another great home - one where there were no cats, nad he had plenty of room to run and play in the backyard and explore the countryside. He especially loved playing in the creek that ran through their property! This home seemed perfect for Witten, although over time he did develop some inappropriate behaviors while his previous owners were providing care for him. You see Witten does not like his nail trimmed, or his feet cleaned or messed with, and because he thoroughly enjoyed playing in the creek, it became important to be able to clean his feet when it was time to come back inside. His owners said he typically will warn with a growl first - and then will offer to bite as you try to clean up his feet. They had a toddler in the home who could do anything with Witten, but they just were not comfortable with this behavior. While back at Safe Haven we were always mindful of handling Witten safely and worked around his triggers while he was under our care. Witten has had multiple dog playmates at the shelter, whom he enjoys spending time with, both on walks and in the play yard. So, with proper introductions, we do believe he would do alright with certain doggy siblings, but his next owner should know he does resource guard, especially around food, and cats are still a definite no. In January 2024 Witten was adopted by a young man and while things were going well, the owner just felt like he didn't have time to take care of Witten anymore....and we are saddened to say this dog has once again found himself needing a true forever home! We are convinced that we have learned more about Witten every step along the way of his adoption story here at Safe Haven, but we are committed to find him one LAST adoptive family that will devote their home and heart to Witten and give him what he deserves forever! So if you are looking for a large active loving dog - please consider coming to meet Witten and see if he may just be the perfect rescue pup for you!
