My Story

JCLDR IS COURTESY LISTING WOODY FOR THE SHELTER — CONTACT DIRECT Erin Flynn KPA-CTP, CPDT-KA, CGC (920) 203-9733 [email protected] Thanks Janeen! Shelter address is Waushara County Animal Shelter N1748 State HWY 22 Wautoma, WI 54982 STATS, OVERVIEW…). Our special needs dog Woody is approximately 2 years as of 1/25 neutered, up to date on vaccs, HW neg and on Nexguard and Heart Guard Plus. He is special needs due to a mild form of *Accentric pupils which causes some peripheral vision impairment. It doesn’t slow him down, see explanation at the bottom of this document. Some hearing imbalance can go with the accentric pupils. See explanation for more detail. Woody weighs 55 pounds, he is good with most other dogs. He plays with most dogs that have been socialized, however he gets overstimulated easily and then it can insue and has turned from play, so we feel he should be an only dog. Doggie friends and play dates with total supervision after successful slow introductions. He usually adapts and does pretty good. No small dogs whatsoever. No cats or small pets. Again over stimulation would be his challenge. No children either. Many things this nice boy will be cooperative with once he has a leader he can trust. And he warm up quickly, to leadership and that might include after initial introductions, visitors to a home would probably be accepted and he would get friendly. He is leash reactive on a leash or off leash with anyone new to his space territory. He is cautious mostly and warn handler. We call it stranger danger and men are harder for him to accept than women. Again, trust be built. He is in a shelter at this time, is being worked with and is doing exceedingly well but, in a home and a new environment he will need patience and SLOW introductions to everything. Because of his handicap, he should never be off long line or leash for safety’s sake. (He really seems pretty normal but still needs to be protected) Everyone that is a regular at the shelter can touch him pretty much everywhere. Remember he is in a shelter. He does like some toys. As with many dogs, he is uneasy with vetting and has been muzzled. Because he is in the shelter he has to relieve himself in the kennel so would have to learn house manners. He really is responsive and wants to please and with consistency and treats this dog could excel. When he is told to go potty he will respond. Treat motivated so that helps him respond to hand signals and to body language as well as voice commands he can hear clearly. HISTORY: Woody and two assumed littermates were found running loose, killing chickens. He was picked up and taken to another shelter, then transferred to his current shelter and has been there since October of 2023. He was fostered once with intent to adopt but he fought with the resident and no one knows what set it off. He had only been there a week. So came back to the shelter. Hence no other resident dogs. Just dogs slowly introduced and supervised. GOOD: He is Catahoula loyal and is really loving and very smart. He loves games, mental stimulation, kongs, wants to please. He is very active and enthusiastic and goofy.. he makes you laugh. (JCLDR feels this dog is worthy of work, and kindness and love and to given a real chance with patience in a home that is guided; a calm not overstimulated environment. And with people who do not push calendars and watches to his advancement. BAD: May not be totally house broke totally but he did well in the foster home and he does need consistency and dedication to take him out often and teach him that. We don’t know if he is crate broke, but properly crate broke he might be more consistent in training for relieving himself. Just a suggestion. UGLY: One time over a year ago he did react to one of the shelter staff but that could have been due to poor vision and light and acoustics in the auditorium. He did warm up to her after careful re introduction and chill time to digest things. This dog shows wonderful potential to be IN TIME, with proper guidance a really good almost normal Catahoula. Catahoulas are still Catahoulas.
